Brief Encounters is a kinetic typography project that visually interprets and expands upon an inspirational quote by Richard Wagamese.
The project brief called for the development of a type-driven animation that interprets a poem or song, using motion to convey its emotional tone, rhythm, and meaning. The main challenge lay in balancing dynamic movement with the stillness and quietness inherent in the chosen quote.
I began by extending the original quote into a short-form poem, framing it as a contemplative tribute to brief yet meaningful encounters. The pacing was intentionally slow and deliberate, allowing viewers to linger in moments of stillness. Through kinetic typography, I played with spatial rhythm, fade-ins, delays, and overlaps to visually represent the way small gestures and fleeting exchanges carry hidden emotional weight. The minimalist aesthetic kept the focus on the feeling of each moment, rather than overwhelming it with visual noise.
I was responsible for writing, visual development, motion design, and animation. From scripting and emotional mapping to selecting typographic styles and crafting the flow of the piece, I guided the project from concept to execution. Every decision – timing, font weight, positioning – was made to reflect the subtlety and emotional layers of the poem’s message.
The piece began with a close reading and interpretation of Richard Wagamese’s words, leading to a deeper reflection on themes of impermanence, connection, and presence. I studied expressive uses of kinetic typography and explored poetic structures that emphasize rhythm, silence, and spatial pacing. While motion was treated as a language of its own, layout design emphasized white space and timing as tools for evoking presence and stillness, allowing the viewer to linger in the quiet moments between words.
